Traits

Traits are passive abilities that affect a critter stats. Source traits are the specie of a critter, its appendage and foreign traits. Every 5 levels you get a choice of 3 of the critters' traits to unlock, at which point they can be upgraded with skill points, just like skills.

Also note that if a creature is granted a trait from multiple sources, it will be unlocked at a lvl equal to the number of sources. For instance a mantis with bird wings will unlock agile at lvl 2 since it gets it naturally and from the bird wings.

Retiring a critter at maximum level grants you a Gene Splicer. It can be used to give a trait to one of your critters. The kind of trait depends on the species of the critter retired.
